Versailles was established in 1682 by King Louis XIV and remained France's capital city until 1789. It was the site of the signing of the 1783 Treaty of Paris and 1919 Treaty of Versailles. Versailles also was an important location in the French Revolution in the late 1700s and the Franco-Prussian War in 1870.
