About The Presidio of San Francisco

The Presidio was Spain's northernmost military outpost from 1776 to 1821. After their independence, the Mexican government administered the outpost all the way up to their defeat in the Mexican-American War, after which the American government turned the site into a US Army Post. Today the Presidio is a public park within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In addition to having one of the finest collections of military architecture in the US, the parklands shelter 13 plant communities supporting 300 native plant species, and 300 native birds. The unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge from the bluffs above Baker Beach are well worth the hike. Other highlights include the Golden Gate Promenade, Crissy Field, and just under the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, Fort Point.
