The gateway to Africa is also one of North Africa’s oldest cities, and has seen a myriad of powers come and go including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines and an array of European powers, all of which have left their mark. Tangier, a strategic city at the entrance of the Mediterranean, is divided into an old walled city, or medina, and a new modern city, the ville nouvelle. The entrance to the medina is the Grand Socco, a palm-fringed plaza where the journey back in time begins. Further in you will find the sultan’s palace that houses the Kasbah Museum.
