About St. Louis Cathedral

There are few cathedrals in America with the history, beauty and importance of this Catholic church, facing Jackson Square and the Mississippi River in the French Quarter. Among the oldest cathedrals in the country, it was designated a basilica in 1964 by Pope Paul VI. Its cemetery contains the remains of numerous important figures in the city's history, including Voodoo priestess Marie Laveau. At night, lights illuminate the garden's statue of Jesus Christ, casting an imposing and awe-inspiring shadow on the cathedral wall. Take a self-guided tour to take in the artwork, stained glass and gilded altar located inside.
