About Southampton, NY

The town of Southampton, New York is located partly on the South Fork of Long Island. Southampton is home to more than 50,000 people and is also home to the village of Southampton. The town was settled in 1640 and was originally inhabited by the Shinnecock Native American Nation. The town was founded by eight people, and by 1643, the town's population consisted of more than 43 families. Southampton has many historic landmarks, historic districts, historic markers and 47 cemeteries. The town was named after the port city of Southampton in Hampshire, England.
