About Sao Vicente de Fora

Often referred to as more a pantheon than a church, twin-towered São Vicente de Fora is in fact the pantheon of the last Portuguese monarchs. It is the final resting place of the last queen of Portugal, Amelia, as well as her husband, Carlos I. Built between 1582-1704, it lay outside Lisbon’s walls, hence the name St. Vincent Outside the Walls. One of this church’s main attractions is its stunning tiles, which number approximately one million. It also features an ivory statue of Christ carved in the 18th century in Goa, India, a former Portuguese province.
