As the reputed burial place of St. James, one of the apostles of Jesus, this Romanesque cathedral in Plaza del Obradoiro has for centuries been a place of pilgrimage on the Way of St. James. In fact, so many pilgrims have laid their hands on the pillar just inside the doorway to rest that a groove has been worn in the stone. The sacred relics of St. James lie beneath Santiago de Compostela Cathedral’s high altar in a silver coffer and can be viewed from the crypt.
