Featured prominently in the famous novel "Cathedral by the Sea," this great Catalan Gothic church in Barcelona is renowned for its architecture and stained glass windows. Santa Maria del Mar was built between 1329-83 funded solely by merchants of the La Ribera section of the city. The church was designed by architect Berenguer de Montagut. Its name is translated as "St. Mary of the Sea" and was meant to symbolize Barcelona as an important maritime power.
