California's capital city lies at the junction of the Sacramento and American rivers and consists of a mix of modern skyscrapers and historic structures. Sacramento started when John Sutter Sr. created Sutter's Fort in 1839 and the area slowly grew until the California Gold Rush in 1848 brought droves to the region. The city was incorporated in 1850 using the name of the nearby Sacramento River. Sacramento highlights include the Tower Bridge, Old Sacramento, State Capitol, Sutter's Fort, Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and City Historic Cemetery.
