About Richmond

The Commonwealth of Virginia's capital city established in 1742 was named after a London town by William Byrd II because the vision of the James River resembled that of the River Thames from Richmond Hill. Virginia's Richmond was a significant site during the American Revolution and the United States Civil War and its St. John's Church was where U.S. Founding Father Patrick Henry spoke his historic line "Give me liberty, or Give me death" in 1775. Thomas Jefferson and Charles-Louis Clerisseau designed Richmond's Capitol Building in 1785. The city has many museums, theaters and performing arts venues.
