Often called the "Gateway to the Black Hills," the South Dakota city is a popular lodging location for visitors to the nearby Mt. Rushmore National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial, Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park. Rapid City was founded in 1876 by miners and originally called Hay Camp.
