About Rabat

This capital city was named one of the "Top Travel Destinations of 2013" by CNN. Rabat is cosmopolitan, conservative, laid-back and historic. Here you will find a walled city of palm-lined boulevards, a clifftop kasbah, colonial architecture and a mazelike medina (Old City). Some of Rabat’s must-see attractions include the ruins of the old Roman city of Sala Colonia and the Merenid necropolis of Chellah, whose towers and defensive wall still stand today.

Hassan Tower

This red-sandstone minaret of an incomplete mosque is Rabat’s most famous landmark. Hassan Tower was intended to be the largest minaret in the world but in 1199, Sultan Yacoub al-Mansour died and construction on the mosque stopped. The tower reached 140 feet, about half of its intended height, and the rest of the mosque was also left unfinished.
