Legend has it that the town of Oberammergau began production of their famous Passion Play every ten years during the height of the bubonic plague when villagers vowed to honor Christ with the play if they were spared of the disease. As the town avoided the plague throughout the rest of its duration, the town continues to produce the play to this day, with nearly half the town performing and working on production in 2010. Reflecting this strong artistic traditional, Oberammergau hosts many talented and celebrated woodcarvers, as well as detailed frescoes on the exteriors of the majority of their buildings in the forms of fairy tales, religious stories, and optical illusions.
