This popular museum houses one of the largest collections of carriages and coaches in the world. In addition to their use for transportation, carriages and coaches were the status symbols of their day, with many featuring gilded exteriors, rich velvet interiors, and master craftsmanship. The museum is housed on the grounds of the official residence of the Portuguese president. The building, with its Neoclassical exterior and luxuriously decorated interior, is a site in and of itself.
