Home to the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry, Nashville's name is synonymous with country music. Nashville was founded in 1779 and the capital of Tennessee. It became the first state capital to be taken over by Union Troops during the American Civil War in 1862 and was the site of 1864's Battle of Nashville. Nashville is currently Tennessee's second largest city behind Memphis. Other popular tourist attractions are the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, Ryman Auditorium, General Jackson Riverboat, Belle Meade Plantation, Tennessee State Museum, Johnny Cash Museum, Parthenon replica and Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art.
