One of Vancouver Island's major cities has many nicknames including "The Bathtub Racing Capital of the World," "Hub City" and "Harbour City." Nanaimo originated from a trading post in 1853 called Nanaimo Bastion and established by the Hudson Bay Co. after hearing word of coal in the area. Bathtub racing, which uses a bathtub boat, originated in the city. Tourist attractions include the Nanaimo Waterfront, Port Place Shopping Centre, Buttertubs Marsh, Nanaimo Art Gallery and the Miner's Cottage.
