Possible the most infamous volcano in history, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius hearkened the end of Pompeii and many nearby Roman settlements in 79 AD, the molten rock and ash preserving the cities and inhabitants underneath the destruction for centuries. Though the volcano would erupt many times over the ages, the area around it has been designated a national park and features a small network of paths around the mountain. Located just east of Naples, the volcano is closely monitored for signs of eruptions.
