This Tuscan hill town hosts the Festival of the Thrush and produces Brunello di Montalcino wine. Located west of Pienza, the town has existed for hundreds of years. The hill slopes used to be divided into four rival villages. Today, that rivalry is recreated during the festival which includes a parade, day-long feast and long-bow archery competition between the “villages.” Much of the festival takes place at the Castle of Montalcino, a pentagonal castle with five towers that was built in 1361.
