Built by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to commemorate their military victory over Portugal, this 15th century monastery is a fine example of Gothic architecture. Its exterior facade is decorated with manacles and shackles to symbolize the freeing of Christian prisoners from Granada. This Catholic church not only serves as the Archdiocese of Toledo, but its two cloisters serve as home for almost 2,000 of Toledo’s priests and nuns. Visitors are welcome to marvel at the statues, archways and paintings that make this church so beautiful.
