Originally known as Hellgate Trading Post, Missoula provided supplies to settlers moving west in the 1860s. After the Northern Pacific Railway was built in 1883, the town experienced rapid growth and in 1893 the Montana Legislature decided it would serve as the home for the state's first university. Today, it is the cultural center of Montana and houses the Montana Museum of Art & Culture, Bayern Brewery (the oldest Brewery in the state), and the annual River Roots Festival.
