A unique blend of European and Islamic architectural styles, this former capital city has a laid-back atmosphere that stands in contrast to its grand architecture. Though founded in the 11th century, it was the 17th century Sultan Moulay Ismaïl who transformed it into the impressive city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, that it is today. Surrounded by high defensive walls and immense decorated gates, its design and layout has heavily influenced the development of civil and military architecture (or kasbah) and works of art.
