About Marken

A small village and island in North Holland, Marken isolated past has garnered interest from anthropologists as well as tourists looking to see a glimpse into the Netherland's past. Originally a part of the mainland, a storm in the 13th century cut the village off from the rest of mainland, and it remained in isolation from the modernization of Netherland for some time. Though it relied heavily on fishing for many centuries, the village is now a popular tourist attraction due to its authentic, Dutch homes. It can be reached on a half-day trip from Amsterdam.
