About Lisbon Cathedral

This venerated cathedral, constructed in 1150 by the first king of Portugal, is not only built on the site of ancient Roman and Visigoth ruins but on the site of an old mosque. Lisbon Cathedral is the oldest building in the city. Having survived a multitude of earthquakes and undergoing many modifications, it is a mix of architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque. At its entrance visitors will find the baptismal font used in 1195 to baptize Saint Anthony, the patron saint of Lisbon, whose remains can also be found in the cathedral’s sacristy.
