About Kirkjubaejarklaustur

Myth has it that Irish nuns lived in the area prior to Norse settlement of Iceland, based on the unique, natural basalt pavement near the village that is eerily similar to a church floor. Various folktales surround the nuns who supposedly lived here. Today, the small town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur acts a valuable service town for the surrounding East Iceland farms and tourists who wish to explore the region. The town is also a popular vacation spot for family's from Reykjavik who own cottages here.
