About Kilauea Volcano

Hawaii's most active volcano is this shield volcano located on the southeastern part of the Big Island. Kilauea Volcano is said to be 300,000 to 600,000 years old. It is 552 square miles and 4,190 feet above sea level. Kilauea means "spewing" in the Hawaiian language and legend says it is the home of the Hawaiian Volcano Goddess Pele. Its eruption has been recorded 61 times and there has been continuous activity since 1983. It is located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and is a major tourist attraction in Hawaii.
