One of the most famous castles in the Czech Republic is located in the village of Karlstejn, situated just 18 miles from Prague. Karkstejn Castle was built from 1348-1365 at the request of Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV as a place to keep his treasures including coronation jewels and religious artifacts. This High Gothic castle houses extensive artworks including 129 panel paintings by Master Theodoric, a portrait gallery of Czech rulers, replicated crown of the Holy Roman Emperors and St. Wenceslas crown.
