Naxos has undergone several transformations since its founding in 734 BC as Sicily's first Greek colony, the most recent being the sudden transition from sleepy fishing village to popular seaside resort. You could spend all of your time on the beach sipping on a local beverage, or you could spend the whole day seeing the sights. Just up the hill in Taormina are the ruins of a Greco-Roman Amphitheatre and an archeological park. Mount Etna is not too far away either, though you'll need a local guide to get you to the top safely. Once back in Giardini Naxos you can taste the local fare - think anchovies - and sing a few songs at the seaside karaoke. Impromptu dancing on the beach occurs frequently during the summer months.
