The world's busiest motor vehicle bridge spans the Hudson River connecting New York City's Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey is a double-decked structure with 14 lanes to carry 102 million vehicles annually. The 4,760-foot long George Washington Bridge's upper level opened in 1931 and its lower level in 1962 and it was designed by chief engineer Othmar Ammann and architect Cass Gilbert. The American Society for Civil Engineers named it a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1981. The bridge has sidewalks for pedestrians and bicyclists and offers amazing views of New York City.
