The divine Italian city is said to be the "Birthplace of the Renaissance" and it's the capital of the country's Tuscany region. Florence originating in 80 BC as a settlement for the veteran soldiers of Roman Gen. Lucius Cornelius Sulla is recognized for its fine architecture and its historic center is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. Notable landmarks are Palazzo Vecchio, Gallery of the Academy of Florence containing Michelangelo's "David" sculpture, Santa Maria del Fiore Basilica, Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, Cathedral Square, Republic Square and Campanile Tower. Florence is visited by approximately 1.7 million people annually and is said to have one of the largest art collections in the world.
