The world's largest mountain carving is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota near the iconic Mount Rushmore site. Crazy Horse Memorial was started by Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear in 1948 to honor Lakota leader Crazy Horse as well as North American Indians and their culture. The 87-foot face of the memorial is etched out, however, the carving of the memorial continues today. Other attractions on the Crazy Horse Memorial site include the Indian Museum of North America, Native American Cultural Center, a visitor's center, the sculptor's log studio, theaters and gift shops. When finished, the rock carving will be 563 feet tall and 641 feet long. It is visited by more than one million people per year.
