This mountainous region in the province of Asturias is both historically and religiously significant. Covadonga’s Holy Cave houses the tomb of Pelayo, who in 722 won the Battle of Covadonga against the Muslim Moors, which started the Reconquista, a struggle of 750 years between the Muslims and Christians in Spain. Covadonga is also known as the gateway to the pristine Picos de Europa mountain range.
