This Plaza de Cibeles fountain found in one of Madrid’s most beautiful squares is named after the Roman goddess of nature, Cibele (or Ceres). Cibeles Fountain, built between 1777-82, depicts the goddess, who holds the keys to the city, in a chariot being pulled by two lions. Football (aka soccer) fans rally around the fountain to celebrate every time the city’s beloved Real Madrid Football Club wins a cup, as the fountain is considered the most important symbol of Madrid.
