About Christ the Redeemer of the Andes

Standing at 3,832 m(12,572 ft) above sea level on the border of Chile and Argentina, this statue was symbolically crafted from the cannons of war to be a symbol of peace between Argentina and Chile during a period of border disputes in the early 20th century. The statue is only accessible during the summer months on the old road between Mendoza and Santiago de Chile. At his feet rests the words, "Sooner shall these mountains crumble into dust than Chileans and Argentineans break the peace which at the feet of Christ, the Redeemer, they have sworn to maintain."
