Casper originated out of the United States Army post Fort Caspar originally created in 1859 along the Oregon Trail as trading post before the government took it over. Points of interest are National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, Fort Caspar Museum and Historic Site, Werner Wildlife Museum and Nicolaysen Art Museum.
