Located in the Italian city where St. Francis was born and died, this basilica in Assisi is an important Christian pilgrimage site. Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was constructed from 1228 to 1253 with Pope Gregory IX laying the first stone. The structure designed in Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles by Maestro Jacopo Tedesco is made up of two churches - The Upper and Lower Basilica. The UNESCO World Heritage Site contains a crypt with the remains of St. Francis. The basilica is the mother church of the Franciscan Order.
